According to reports in the Corriere dello Sport, Manchester United are about to launch a bid for Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain, in an attempt to snatch him away from Premier League rivals Chelsea.
The Argentine hit-man has been in devastating form this season, but tensions seem to be starting to develop between the player and club President Aurelio De Laurentiis. This was not helped by recent comments from the patron that the 28-year-old appeared in his opinion, to be carrying too much weight and with a host of clubs vying for his signature, his time at the San Paolo may be coming to an end in the summer.
If, as expected, Jose Mourinho takes over the Old Trafford hot-seat in June, its reported he will table a bid of around £62 million to try to beat off competition for the Argentine international, and with the player already on the radar of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, it looks set to trigger off a summer bidding war to acquire one of Europe’s hottest striking talents.
The player’s brother, who is also his agent, declared recently that they would sit down with the Italian club at the end of the current campaign to discuss a new deal, but in light of recent events, this looks more distant than ever.
