A huge blow for the German national team today with the news that midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will miss this summer’s European Championships in France after dislocating his knee-cap in training. The Borussia Dortmund player will also miss the last two Bundesliga matches of the season, with the club currently sitting five points behind Bayern Munich with two matches to go.
Mirror online also states that this unexpected setback could scupper a potential summer move to Manchester City with the 25-year-old lined up as one of Pep Guardiola’s primary targets. Representatives for the midfielder were pictured meeting City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain in Amsterdam in March and it’s understood a deal had been agreed in principle. Gundogan is out of contract at the Westfalenstadion in July 2017 and had been set for a £25 million move to the Premier League.
A medical team will assess the injury in further detail on Saturday before announcing the likely recovery time. Manchester City executives will be waiting nervously for the results.
